Nihao from Beijing,
From the moment I had my bag packed, I was pacing the floor with excitement, anticipation and the thrill of joining my fellow colleagues for a trip of a lifetime to China.
We have arrived safely after a two hour delay at Changi Airport due to a snowstorm in Beijing. An uneventful flight made the trip enjoyable. The group is pumped and the excitement has built and built.
I am a little exhausted after tossing and turning due to lack of sleep. The first leg of the trip was Melbourne to Singapore, and after eight hours and a two hour delay we were back on a flight for another six hours to Beijing. I watched Minions, Trainwrecked and Malificient on the trip and my eyes are tired from lack of sleep and it is difficult to keep them open much longer.
After an hour bus trip to our hotel we have checked into my fang (room). The whole group joined our host Fan Fan and some students for dumplings. We have all been on the subway and shopping at Silk Road shopping centre today.
After much walking and shopping I am really feeling exhausted and this is only day one. Bartering for goods is difficult and cut throat as the vendors get grumpy when you stand your ground on price. The students led by Cathy have been wonderful today and very generous with their time.
Jan and I found a great Chinese night food market where local vendors have weird and wonderful foodstuffs. Bugs that look like cockroaches, seahorses and scorpions were all on offer. we settled for fried dumplings. A slow walk back and we are really ready for bed. So here it is, a great start to our adventure.
Time to go as I need to be up early for the Gugong (Forbidden City) visit Mingtian (tomorrow).
